Pico/Chick Hearn Station

Pico/Chick Hearn Station in Los Angeles is the first subway station named after a sports broadcaster. The station opened in 1993 and was named in honor of Francis Dayle “Chick” Hearn, a beloved play-by-play announcer for the Lakers from 1961 to 2002. Chick Hearn’s enthusiasm for the game and colorful catchphrases made him a legendary announcer, earning him numerous awards, including the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Curt Gowdy Award in 1998.

The station is located in the heart of downtown LA, at the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Figueroa Street. It is served by Metro Rail, the Los Angeles County Metro bus system, and Amtrak. The station also offers a convenient connection to the Expo Line, which connects Downtown LA with Santa Monica and Culver City.

Pico/Chick Hearn Station’s design has historical and modern touches. It features an outdoor plaza with benches honoring Chick Hearn’s memory and artwork from local artists. Inside, the station boasts a beautiful two-story glass atrium designed to evoke the feel of a modern sports arena.

The Pico/Chick Hearn Station also benefits from its prime downtown location. It is near attractions like the Staples Center, L.A. Live, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). The station is a great starting point for exploring the city, whether you’re in town to watch a Lakers game, take in some culture at MOCA, or check out the nearby shops and restaurants.
